SEATTLE – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 2019 Small Business Subcontractor of the Year for the Pacific Northwest Region (Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska) – also known as Region X – is RED, Inc. Communications (RED, Inc.) in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Founded in 1993, RED, Inc. is a is an economically disadvantaged women-owned small business that provides business support services, media consulting, strategic planning, branding, web publishing and development, graphic design, and technical publications support services to clients in both the government and private sectors.

As technical writers and graphic designers at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Department of Energy (DOE) location, the three original founders noticed outside subcontractors were providing deliverables to INL publications that did not meet the agency’s standards. Recognizing there was an opportunity for a small and responsive entity to improve product quality, cost and timeliness, these women took a leap of faith, left their jobs at the INL and established RED, Inc.

During the past 26 years RED, Inc. has grown from three employees in a one room office with one desk and two computers to a company with three office locations and more than 100 employees supporting a diverse group of government agencies across the country.

RED, Inc. supports six DOE laboratories and other federal agencies including the National Park Service, the Forest Service, Naval Reactors, the Department of the Navy, the Department of the Air Force, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

The company has delivered both cost savings and problem solving to the federal government. In one example, the VA had initially awarded a $400,000 contract to a competitor to restructure and redesign their website. However, the contract was not completed successfully. Since RED had an ongoing web maintenance contract with the VA, they were asked to assume the redesign project and successfully completed it for $120,000 in one year.

“Small businesses like RED are a valuable asset to the federal government. They bring innovation, resourcefulness and creative approaches to problem solving,” said Associate Administrator Robb Wong, SBA Office of Government Contracting and Business Development. “That is why the SBA works with federal agencies to see as many contracts go into the hands of small business as possible.”

The SBA Small Business Subcontractor of the Year award – part of National Small Business Week May 5-11, 2019 – recognizes small businesses that have high contract performance, show innovativeness of products or services, fill a niche or a technical need not being adequately addressed by the competition, and deliver exceptional results.

“I am honored to receive this award, which is also a credit to the great employees at RED, Inc. Their commitment to quality, high-end products and customer satisfaction are instrumental in the success of RED, Inc.,” RED Owner/Manager Linda Keele said. “I would like to thank the individuals in the SBA Boise District office who have provided support and assistance to RED, Inc. over the past 26 years and the Idaho National Laboratory, who nominated RED, Inc. for the 2019 Small Business Subcontractor of the Year Award.”

Over the years RED, Inc. has received counseling from SBA-funded resource partner SCORE and the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). The firm has actively participated in other SBA programs such as the WIPP ChallengeHER event and educational events hosted by the SBA Boise District Office.

"National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the impact of small businesses, which make up 99 percent of all businesses in the Pacific Northwest and create two out of every three net new jobs,” SBA Regional Administrator Jeremy Field said. “Small business owners represent our country’s best. They are innovators, job creators and community leaders. Shining a spotlight on their inspirational stories and journeys is an honor.”

RED, Inc. has garnered more than 100 national awards for graphic design and communications product development including 18 Summit Creative Awards and 36 Communicator Awards, the latter of which is judged by the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts (AIVA).

Each year since 1963, the President has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. SBA recognizes outstanding small business owners for their personal successes and contributions to our nation.
