SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration will honor Iron Construction as the 2014 Small Business of the Year for Northern California.

Founded in 2001 by Claudia Folzman and Dave Edgar, Iron Construction, Inc. began with the vision of creating a non-traditional commercial general contracting company where executive management was actively involved with projects and clients. It is this vision that has shaped the core values of Iron Construction, placing the highest importance on client relationships. These relationships are a recipe for success.

“Claudia and Dave’s hard work, advanced ideas and devotion to our community have helped them succeed,” said Mark Quinn, SBA San Francisco District Office District Director. “It is truly an honor to recognize their achievements and the role they play in driving Northern California’s economy.”

As demand for Iron Construction’s services increased, Folzman and Edgar decided to build a permanent home for their company instead of continuing to rent a facility. Partnering with Bay Area Development Company and Wells Fargo Bank, they purchased a 27,000 square foot space in Sunnyvale in 2013 and began extensive renovations that include utilizing geothermal energy built to LEED Gold standards. In addition to being extremely energy efficient, the new location gives Folzman and Edgar the room they need to double their workforce over time.

Jim Baird, President and CEO of Bay Area Development, says, “Claudia and Dave run an exceptional company and are passionate about delivering construction services that are outstanding in every way. It is truly fitting to honor a company that has weathered the recession, grown substantially, created a significant number of jobs and gives back to the communities it serves.”

Iron Construction places high importance on being socially responsible and connecting to the community, with events like the annual Iron Construction Charity Golf Classic, an event that has raised over $350K for Operation: Care and Comfort (OCC). Since 2003, OCC has shipped nearly one million pounds of care packages for distribution to Marine, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard personnel that are deployed in conflict regions.

Additional philanthropic outreach includes annual participation in OCC’s Adopt a Military Family during the holiday season, Loaves and Fishes Thanksgiving Canned Food Collection, Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence Holiday Clothing and Toy Drive, Friends of Los Gatos Creek Clean Up Day, Share Your Holiday program, Walk for Life, Tough Mudder’s Wounded Warrior Project, Links for Life and reaching out to and supporting military families in need throughout the greater Bay Area.

Iron Construction and its owners will be honored on May 7th at their newly renovated space in Sunnyvale. The private event is being held as part of the San Francisco Small Business Week celebration, which runs from May 12-16. www.sfsmallbusinessweek.com.

The San Francisco SBA District Office covers Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, and Sonoma Counties.  In Fiscal Year 2013, the District guaranteed over 1,500 small business loans valued at $864 million.  Over 115 banks, credit unions and community lenders participated in this program.  Annually, the San Francisco District Office cohosts over 1,000 training events for over 50,000 Bay Area small business or prospective businesses from SBA resource partners.
