BOSTON – Today, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced that ReconCraft  - owned by Jay Hoflich - has been selected to receive the prestigious Massachusetts and New England SBA Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year Award for 2014.

The selection for this award was based on the following criteria: staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales and/or unit volume, innovation of product or service, and response to adversity and community contributions.  Veterans Group LLC was nominated for this award by Stephen White, a Vice President for Santander Bank.

ReconCraft was founded by three former US Coast Guard officers, and their goal is to hire veterans in a mission to support the US Armed forces by building durable aluminum workboats.

The company designs marine vessels to operate in waterways that are inaccessible by traditional watercraft, such as tidal regions, swamps, shallow rivers, and debris-laden flood zones. The vessels can operate in as little as four inches of water. ReconCraft has received assistance from SCORE, the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center network, and the Procurement Technical Assistance Center. They have also received an SBA loan guaranty.

“It is an honor to present this award to Jay Hoflich, who made a tremendous sacrifice for our country as a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, and who continues to serve the US armed forces today by starting and growing his small business, ReconCraft. Mr. Hoflich and his company also demonstrate a continued commitment to providing the veteran community the support they need,” said Bob Nelson, Massachusetts District Director.  “They are truly an American small business success story.”

Jay Hoflich will be honored at an SBA awards breakfast along with the other Massachusetts Small Business Week 2014 winners at Lombardo’s on May 13, 2014.
