Release Date:
Tuesday, April 30, 2019

PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 2019 Portland District Family-Owned Small Business of the Year is Native American Technology Corporation (NATECH) in North Bend, Oregon.

Founded in 1995, NATECH provides professional and technical staffing services, primarily in the federal aerospace and defense sectors.  Over the years, the company grew its customer base and expanded operations to more than 70 employees working in federal spaces across the country including Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

“The spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in our small business community is part of what makes life in the Pacific Northwest so special,” SBA Portland District Director Martin Golden said. “NATECH represents the thousands of small businesses dedicated to building a better life for their families, employees and communities.”

The SBA Portland District Family-Owned Small Business of the Year – part of National Small Business Week May 5-11, 2019 – honors a family-owned and operated business which has been passed on from one generation to the next.

“Working with our family business has been very rewarding,” NATECH President and granddaughter Cori Kelly said. “I am so excited that NATECH is being recognized for our continued growth for more than 20 years.”

When Wanda Williford and her husband John Williford started NATECH to provide support to the Federal Aviation Administration, they were laying the foundation for a family-owned business spanning three generations.   They knew that starting a second career would pose unique challenges and that they needed help in building their new business.

Through the support of the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), the Government Contract Assistance Program (GCAP), the SBA HUBZone Certification Program and the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, NATECH was able to win multiple federal contracts resulting in nearly doubling its revenue within the past three years.

NATECH has also received mentoring and business training from the Portland SCORE chapter as well as receiving help in crafting a succession/transition plan to help scale the company for its unprecedented growth.  The company has been able to fuel this growth and its ability to double its workforce in 2018 with the help of the SBA Guaranteed Loan Program.

Today, a new generation is helping to build the company’s future as Wanda and John Williford transition to serving on the board of directors.  The firm created a scholarship to help Native American students attend college and remain very active in supporting the local community of North Bend and Coos Bay.

"National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the impact of small businesses, which make up 99 percent of all businesses in the Pacific Northwest and create two out of every three net new jobs,” SBA Regional Administrator Jeremy Field said. “Small business owners represent our country’s best. They are innovators, job creators and community leaders. Shining a spotlight on their inspirational stories and journeys is an honor.”

A celebration honoring local SBA winners from Oregon and the SBA Portland District – which serves Oregon and southwest Washington – will be May 2. Other SBA local awards that will be recognized at the celebration include Small Business Person of the Year, 8(a) Graduate of the Year, Nano Business of the Year, Small Business Champion, Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Excellence Award, and the Small Business Lending All-Star awards.

Each year since 1963, the President has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. SBA recognizes outstanding small business owners for their personal successes and contributions to our nation.
