ST. CROIX, USVI – The U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is recruiting participants for the first Emerging Leaders training series to be delivered in the Virgin Islands.

The Emerging Leaders executive-level training series focuses on established small companies ready for growth and with potential for job creation.  The seven-month intensive, executive entrepreneurship education series includes approximately 100 hours of classroom time per participant and provides the opportunity for small business owners to work with experienced mentors, attend workshops and develop connections with their peers, city leaders and financial communities.

“Since its inception, the Emerging Leaders initiative has trained more than 3,000 promising small business owners in underserved communities,” said SBA District Director Yvette T. Collazo. “In the Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands district we graduated 17 companies in the last two years, three of which are based in either St. Croix or St. Thomas. By conducting the training series directly in the Virgin Islands, we are making this invaluable training accessible to even more small business owners, and supporting job creation and economic development in the territory.”

Launched on the mainland in 2008, the Emerging Leaders has been a catalyst for expanding opportunities in underserved communities. Its impact continues to grow, as Emerging Leader graduates have reported that nearly 70 percent achieved revenue growth and over 80 percent created new jobs or retained all existing jobs.  They have also secured more than $1 billion in government contracts and accessed $73 million in new financing.

Over a period of seven months, participants will work with a course facilitator and subject matter experts, as well as develop connections with other business owners and peer mentors. Upon graduation, they will exit the program with a three-year strategic growth plan for their business.
