FRESNO, CA – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced today that World Wind & Solar in Tehachapi, CA, was selected as the 2016 Small Business of the Year for the SBA’s Fresno District, which serves 15 counties in the San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast.

Annually since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation recognizing National Small Business Week and honoring the contributions of America’s entrepreneurs.  More than half of Americans own or work for small businesses, which create about two out of every three new jobs in the United States.  During May, the U.S. Small Business Administration highlights outstanding small business owners from all 50 states in a variety of categories including Small Business of the Year.

World Wind & Solar (WWS) is a woman-owned solar and wind energy firm in Kern County, which contains some of the nation’s largest commercial wind and solar projects.  Husband and wife owners Nikki and Buddy Cummings have family roots in Tehachapi going back more than 100 years.  After leaving the area to live in Southern California, the couple returned to Tehachapi to build a business, along with partner Harvey Stephens. Brought nearly to the brink of failure in 2013 by the expiration of Production Tax Credits in 2012, the company has since risen to even greater success because of diversification, the support of family, SBA, and the CSU Bakersfield Small Business Development Center.

“This particular award is one of the highest honors we have received yet because it’s a national organization that recognizes small business like ours,” said Nikki Cummings, President of WWS. “We have taken a number of risks in the last few years, including expanding our services into other sectors within the renewable industry such as solar, but it paid off. Today, we count our blessings and we’re a better company because of it.”

WWS provides service in more than 20 states that include a diversified client portfolio of more than 25 companies. They provide consulting services to some of the largest renewable asset owners in the world, and serve three separate sectors: wind operations and maintenance, construction and solar. WWS employs a team of 95 skilled employees and anticipate ongoing growth as demand for renewable energy continues.

World Wind & Solar’s corporate achievements, and the Cummings’ support of numerous community programs and organizations have won them several previous awards, and reflect their personal and corporate philosophies of serving others, and giving back to the community.  World Wind & Solar was nominated by the CSU Bakersfield Small Business Development Center.  They will be recognized by the SBA on May 12 with an award presentation at the Tehachapi Business Conference.
