LOUISVILLE – As we usher in the holiday season, SBA invites you to be part of the growing movement to #ShopSmall while preparing for gatherings with family and friends.

U.S. Small Business Administration Acting Administrator Chris Pilkerton is encouraging Americans to support local communities by shopping at small businesses on Saturday, November 30. Celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday allows consumers to make a tremendous impact in their neighborhoods by supporting local small businesses. Last year, an estimated 104 million consumers nationwide “shopped small” on Small Business Saturday.

This year marks the tenth Small Business Saturday, an annual celebration of America’s small business community. Last year on Small Business Saturday, Americans spent a combined $17.8 billion at independent neighborhood retailers and restaurants.

Over 99% of businesses in Kentucky are small. Almost half of Kentucky’s workers are either employed by a small business or own a small business. And two out of three net new jobs are created by small businesses. Small business is a big part of our economy.

In Kentucky, the SBA has been celebrating Small Business Saturday with our small business resource partners, the Kentucky SBDC, SCORE and the Women’s Business Center. We have also celebrated with the Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA – Keep Louisville Weird) and other organizations, such as our local chambers of commerce, that support and promote small businesses across the state.

You can do your part to #ShopSmall by following these three simple acts:

  • Commit to purchasing from a locally owned small business. Get to know the owner and make your gift more meaningful by sharing their story as part of what you give your family and friends.
  • Enjoy the experience. Discover new and unique local stores and restaurants.
  • Take part in Small Business Saturday on social media, using the hashtag #ShopSmall to show your support.
