PHILADELPHIA– U.S. Small Business Administration Eastern Pennsylvania Director Tony Leta today announced that Philadelphia will host an InnovateHer Challenge Competition in conjunction with The Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs (AWE).  The Innovate Her Challenge is a national competition aimed at unearthing products and services impacting and empowering the lives of women and families.  SBA’s national 2015 first place winner was Philadelphia’s Bethany Edwards, who won out against 15 finalists from across the country. Her firm, LIA Diagnostics, designed a pregnancy test to provide a better experience for women at a stressful moment in their lives.

All applications for the Philadelphia Region competition are now being accepted and are due by Oct. 23, 2015.  Finalists will be notified by Oct. 30, 2015 and are expected to participate in live finals from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2015 at World Café Live, 3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Apply online at Additional information on the ChallengeHer Competition:

“Our workforce looks very different from 50 years ago.  Women now make up nearly half of the labor force and play a critical role in our nation’s prosperity.  Most children live in households where all parents work.  As our population ages, families are increasingly caring for aging parents while balancing the needs of work and home,” Leta said.  “As the demands on women and families grow, the need for unique products and services that address these challenges increases.  This Challenge will provide a platform to fulfill that need.”

Local competitions, like the one in Philadelphia, are being held throughout the country culminating in a national pitch competition in Washington, D.C. March 16-17, 2016.  The winner of the Philadelphia Region’s challenge will have the opportunity to compete for $70,000 in cash prizes offered by Microsoft.  AWE is joined by the University City Science Center, Robin Hood Ventures, Techgirlz, and Colliders Accelerator to present the Philadelphia Region Challenge Competition.
