“It’s wonderful to have the privilege to recognize the achievements of leading veteran-owned Pennsylvania small businesses,” said Antonio (Tony) Leta, U.S. SBA Eastern Pennsylvania Director.  “Small businesses like Alpha Architect are where the rubber meets the road, helping drive our nation’s economic recovery and creating jobs.  SBA and our resource and lending partners are proud to see these American entrepreneurship success stories.”

Alpha Architect is a research-intensive asset management firm focused on systematic value investing.  Based out of Broomall, PA, the firm provides three core services: Active ETF management (Tickers: QVAL and IVAL), custom value investing strategies for individual clients, and quantitative research consulting services.  Founded in 2010 as a limited liability company, the company has grown from humble beginnings to a firm of 9 finance professionals and currently manages approximately $250M for clients across the globe.

“After selling a prize steer at the local county fair, I managed to accumulate a few thousand dollars at the ripe age of 12.  Unsure of what to do with the proceeds, my grandmother sent me books on Warren Buffett.  Ever since, I’ve been passionate about value investing and the world of finance,” Gray said. “Receiving this award is proof that veterans can compete successfully with Wall Street.  The SBA has been pivotal to our success as we turn toward institutions and larger clients that want to avoid the excessive fees and opacity of big firms.  This vote of confidence has an impact on our firm that will last well beyond the fanfare that we are humbled to receive.”

Prior to founding the firm, Gray spent his formative years living on a 65,000 acre cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains, where he learned the importance of hard work at a young age.  After graduating magna cum laude from the Wharton School of Business in 2002 and passing composite exams in his PhD program at the University of Chicago, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as a ground intelligence officer during several crises, including the Leyte Mudslide disaster in the Philippines and as a military advisor to the Iraqi Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Through teamwork, academic excellence, and a commitment to military values, Wes has built Alpha Architect from a small shop into a proven success story.  He is recognized in his field as a market leader in the active ETF industry, and his research is accessed by financial service professionals from across the globe.  I was excited to join the team when I was approached by Wes,” said Pat Cleary, a Harvard Business School graduate and former U.S. Marine Captain who recently joined Alpha Architect to serve as the firm’s Chief Operations Officer.

SBA mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator, Natalia Olson-Urtecho, and SBA Eastern Pennsylvania Director Antonio (Tony) Leta, present the 2015 Small Business Week at the annual “SBA Day at the Ballpark” event June 18. The event is open to the media.

The awards ceremony begins at 10 a.m. June 18 with a luncheon at the “XFINITY Live! Philadelphia” restaurant at 1100 Pattison Ave. (tickets available: www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/832621) followed by a 1:05 p.m. Phillies game at nearby Citizens Bank Park (tickets available: www.phillies.com/sbaday). SBA’s Eastern Pennsylvania Veteran-Owned Small Business Person of the Year award winner is selected annually from among nominees located across Pennsylvania’s eastern 40 counties. These events are local observances of the annual Presidentially-designated National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week recognizes the small business community’s contribution to the American economy.
