SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The U. S. Small Business Administration Syracuse district office announced today the class schedule for the 2014 Emerging Leaders initiative for Syracuse-area small businesses, with applications being accepted through March 22, 2104.

Entering its fourth year, the initiative in Syracuse has trained 51 small business owners in Central New York, helping them to grow and create jobs. To participate in the 2014 SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative, a business must:

  • Be located in the City of Syracuse or nearby area.
  • Have been established for at least three (3) years (this curriculum is not for start-up companies).
  • Have annual revenue between $400,000 and $10 million per year.
  • Have employees (i.e. at least one employee besides the owner).
  • Be represented by the key decision maker of the qualified business.
  • Participant must be able to commit to attending 13 training sessions and complete required homework (approximately a 100 hour commitment).

The seven month executive entrepreneurship education series is provided at no cost to the 15 selected participants. It provides the opportunity for small business owners to work with experienced mentors, attend workshops, and develop connections with their peers, city leaders, and financial communities. Upon graduation, participants will exit the program with a strategic growth plan for their business, developed using the knowledge, skills, and techniques honed in the class.

WHEN: First day of class is April 22, 2014 from 5-9:00 pm, subsequent classes will be held every other Tuesday through October 21, from 5-8:00 pm

The Emerging Leaders initiative has been a catalyst for expanding opportunities for underserved communities.  Surveyed Emerging Leader graduates have created nearly 2,000 new full-time jobs have been created since the program’s inception. These graduates also reported having secured more than $73 million in new financing for their businesses, and increased confidence when competing for government contracts. After graduating from the Emerging Leaders training, companies have reportedly been awarded federal, state, local and tribal contracts worth more than $1 billion. Sixty-two percent of surveyed participants have reported an increase in revenue, while 72 percent of those surveyed have reported maintaining or creating new jobs in their communities.

Partners pledging their support for the initiative this year include CenterState CEO, CNY TDO, City of Syracuse Office of Neighborhood and Business Development, Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc., MACNY, Onondaga SBDC, SUNY ESF, Syracuse SCORE, Syracuse University, The Falcone Center, The Tech Garden and the WISE Women’s Business Center.
