SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The U.S. Small Business Administration has selected Catherine Thiaville and Joseph Cattadoris, Jr., owners of Metal Solutions, Inc. based in Utica, N.Y., as the Syracuse District winners of 2018 Small Business Person of the Year Award.  Nominated by NBT Bank, NA, Thiaville and Cattadoris were chosen for the award based on their company’s long-term success, and growth in sales and employees.

“I would like to thank NBT Bank for nominating us for the award.  They have been a great partner for many years. I would like to thank the SBA for the award but more importantly for their support. Without their support and resources it’s hard to imagine where we all would be today. My dad got his start in sheet metal during World War II. He was a sheet metal mechanic stationed in the Pacific and he had a flying sheet metal shop whose job it was to patch the planes after they returned from battle. When he returned home and started the business, I’m sure he never could have imagined that 64 years later where Metal Solutions would be today with second and third-generation ownership. The credit for this goes to the phenomenal group of dedicated employees we have working for us, some whom have been with us for over 20 years, small business customers we have served over the years, and the many small business suppliers who have served us,” said Catherine Thiaville, Metal Solutions CEO, as she accepted the award with Joseph Cattadoris, Jr., Metal Solutions president, on Wednesday.

Metal Solutions, Inc. is a full-service manufacturer of precision-fabricated sheet metal products serving a wide variety of industries including mass transit and HVAC across the Northeast and Canada. The company began as New Hartford Sheet Metal in a small garage in 1954 by Joseph Cattadoris Sr. and Henry Niemczyk with only $800 in capital and equipment. Metal Solutions moved into their current location on Broad Street in Utica in 1993. The second-generation sibling team of Catherine Thiaville and Joseph Cattadoris, Jr. has guided the growth of Metal Solutions into its seventh decade of success, with 54,000-square-feet of manufacturing space and 80 employees. Metal Solutions holds ISO 9001:2015, NYS Woman-Owned Business Enterprise, and U.S. Department of Transportation Disadvantaged Business Enterprise certifications. In 2017, Metal Solutions used the SBA 504 program with NYBDC and NBT Bank, NA to refinance the Broad Street property and invest in their operational processes, equipment and employees.

Thiaville and Cattadoris received the Syracuse District award at SBA’s annual awards luncheon on May 2 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Syracuse as part of SBA’s National Small Business Week celebration. Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.
