BOSTON – The Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Sugarbabies Inc. the 2017 Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Massachusetts.

Sugarbabies Inc. earned the recognition for its success as the region's leading young party band company, specializing in: weddings, parties, corporate events and other high-profile functions in need of high-energy performers. Sugarbabies finds young musicians at Berklee College of Music, matches them up into bands by chemistry and trains them to perform professionally. Since 2010, Sugarbabies has developed a portfolio of major clients including: Hard Rock Café, Harvard University, Foxwoods, Fenway Park, NECN, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Magic 106.7, House of Blues, Rolex, Boston Magazine, Paypal, New England Aquarium; and has performed nationally and internationally for audiences of up to 60,000 people.

“It’s a pleasure to honor Eytan Nicholson with the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award,” SBA’s Massachusetts District Director Robert Nelson said. “Eytan’s ambition, determination and enthusiasm in building Sugarbabies into a success, exemplifies the creative entrepreneurial spirit that our region represents.  He has built a truly phenomenal business as a young entrepreneur."

In their first full year, Sweet Tooth & the Sugarbabies Band reached 170 performances and were rated the #1 band in the region. Since then, Sugarbabies have expanded to 4 innovative bands performing over 300 shows per year. From scraping by and having to "pay to play" at clubs, the company is now putting close to a half-million dollars annually in the pockets of aspiring performers. Sugarbabies Inc prides itself in creating paid jobs for talented and deserving music students - sustaining and empowering them with a structured training program and creating career opportunities.

Founder and CEO, Eytan Nicholson started Sugarbabies as a senior year project for his Professional Music Major at Berklee College of Music.  He identified a problem with the party band/gig industry – too many bands were underwhelming and inconsistent, having been comprised of tired performers just seeking an easy paycheck.  Eytan disrupted the industry by designing an innovative training program that takes raw talent and develops them into dynamic, versatile and professional-grade performers. The business model spent more resources and investing in band chemistry, professionalism and performance ability – allowing Sugarbabies to set high standards in the industry.

Mr. Nicholson graduated as a member of 2016 SBA E200/Emerging Leaders Initiative program.

“Nothing quite like having a room full of bosses who are experts at their own hustle and clueless about everyone else’s trying to learn business together - awesome experience!” -said Mr. Nicholson.

The Young Entrepreneur of the Year award is presented to any individual under the age of 30, who owns at least 51% and demonstrates evidence of success as measured by sales and profits for the past three years, increased jobs, an innovative product, and demonstrated potential for long-term success.

Sugarbabies was nominated by Beth Davis, Principal, Planning What’s Next.

Eytan Nicholson will be honored at an SBA awards lunch along with the other 2017 Massachusetts Small Business Week winners at Granite Links Golf Club on May 2, 2017.
