ALBANY, N.Y. – Two local small businesses were recognized during National Small Business Week at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 21st Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon in Albany on Tuesday, May 7th. Small businesses are selected for the Excellence Awards based on their company’s longevity, innovation, sales growth, increased employment, ability to overcome adversity or community contributions.

NBT Bank presented a 2019 Small Business Excellence Award to Lake George Distilling Company LLC, owned by John McDougall and Robin McDougall at 1162 State Route 149 in Fort Ann.

NBT Bank is proud to nominate Lake George Distilling Co. as our 2019 Small Business Excellence Award Recipient. This start-up business began in 2013 and grown sales over that period 707 percent,” said nominator Timothy LaSarso, NBT Bank senior commercial banking relationship manager.

“We are humbled and honored to accept this award. We are a small family business that has grown from two employees to 16 at the height of the season. We turned our passion for craft spirits into a successful business and we look forward to serving the Adirondack Region for years to come,” said John McDougall, Lake George Distilling Company LLC co-owner.

The 504 Company presented a 2019 Small Business Excellence Award to Morcon, Inc., owned by Joe Raccuia at 879 State Route 22 in Cambridge.

“Joe and his team have transformed Morcon Tissue since acquiring the company in 2013, growing both revenues and margins as well as creating good paying U.S. manufacturing jobs in rural areas,” said nominator Ross Pancoe, The 504 Company senior vice president.

“Morcon has more than doubled its business over the past five years. An integral part of this growth has been the outstanding support we received from the U.S. Small Business Administration. This partnership has certainly propelled us to new heights. We are extremely grateful for this recognition,” said Joe Raccuia, Morcon, Inc. owner.

“The 21st Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon gives us the opportunity to celebrate our business community leaders for their small business successes,” said Bernard J. Paprocki, SBA Syracuse district director. “Small business owners develop deep community connections, provide the critical backbone of our economy, employ local residents, and contribute to the vibrancy and innovation of our nation.”

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2019 National Small Business Week (NSBW) was held May 5-11 and is an annual event dedicated to recognizing the nation’s top small businesses, entrepreneurs, small business advocates and champions from across the country. Every day, small businesses create 21st century jobs, support our neighborhoods and cities, and increase America’s global competitiveness.
