Back in April, I decided to start my own baking business, using the Cottage Food law through my home. I registered for a business license and started plugging away at the application for three weeks. I sent it in, and now nearly 12 weeks later, they're still dragging their feet and not getting back to me ("10 applications ahead of yours" has been the answer for the last 3 weeks). The main reason I wanted to go the route of Cottage Food was to not have to deal with renting a commercial kitchen. I have all the equipment I need for my business right in my own home. Where I live, commercial kitchens are quite scarce unless I want to drive an hour each way. As this endeavor, and myself, continue to get strung along, I'm getting tired of the inaction. I want to be baking and providing a unique product to the public -now-. Of course, I want to do it legally. As far the business goes, I have the following: business license business plan recipes ingredient labels packaging business cards website & Facebook page liability insurance lined up (not yet purchased) Food Handler's card If I was to find a commercial kitchen I liked, could I purchase the liability insurance and just start baking and selling? Is it that easy?
