Boston-based Atlas Devices, LLC Wins Massachusetts SBA Small Business Exporter Award
BOSTON – Bryan Schmid, president of Boston-based Atlas Devices, LLC, has been named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2012 Massachusetts Small Business Exporter of the Year according to an announcement made by Robert H. Nelson, Massachusetts SBA Director.
The Small Business Exporter of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual or individuals who own and operate a small business engaged in exporting. Nominations are evaluated on the following criteria: (1) Increased sales, profits and/or growth of employment because of exporting. (2) Creative overseas marketing strategies. (3) Effective solutions to export-related problems and (4) Voluntary assistance with other firms engaged in exporting. Paula Murphy, Director, Massachusetts Export Center, nominated Schmid for this award.
Atlas Devices, founded by innovators from MIT in 2005, develops cutting edge technologies for military and government agencies. Their flagship product, the Atlas Power Ascender enables ascent up buildings and other vertical surfaces at unprecedented speeds.
Schmid said, "I'm honored that Atlas Devices is recognized as a global leader for its performance and growth through high tech R&D and manufacturing in Massachusetts. We're fortunate to be surrounded by fantastic resources in the Commonwealth and are excited about the future as we continue to deliver advanced solutions to elite military units around the world."
Recognizing that global markets would be critical to his company’s growth, Schmid went to the Massachusetts Export Center for guidance in 2008. Currently, exports now count for over 50% of Atlas’ total sales. “It is no wonder that Bryan Schmid was selected as the National Small Business Exporter of the Year. He is a natural fit for this award,” said Nelson. “By taking advantage of the services offered by the Massachusetts Export Center, one of SBA’s top resource partners, Schmid has been able to expand his business, create jobs and effectively compete in the international marketplace.”
Mr. Schmid will be honored at an SBA awards celebration along with the other Massachusetts Small Business Week 2012 winners at an event at Fenway Park on June 6, 2012.
