Building on a Legacy of Discovery Leads to Success on Oregon’s Coast

Overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon is the Astoria Crest Motel, where in 1805, Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery took in the very same majestic view as they journeyed to their future winter camp in nearby Fort Clatsop. Originally known as the Crest Motel when it first opened its doors in 1952, the property had gradually fallen into a state of disrepair and was at risk of being shuttered in 2014. Air Force veteran and entrepreneur Marshall Doyle and his wife Patricia, along with business partner Don West and his wife Wendy, saw this as an opportunity to save a local treasure and strengthen the community. They knew in order to turn their dream into a reality they needed access to capital to purchase the property.

Working with a local lender, they were able to structure a loan that incorporated an SBA 504 loan through Evergreen Business Capital which enabled them to secure the financing they needed. The SBA 504 Loan Program is an economic development loan tool that offers small businesses another avenue for business financing, while promoting business growth, and job creation. It provides approved small businesses with long-term, fixed-rate financing used to acquire fixed assets for expansion or modernization.

Thanks to Marshall Doyle’s property management experience, Don West’s extensive experience in the hotel industry, and a generous amount of “sweat equity” from their families, the Astoria Crest Motel is enjoying a resurgence as more and more travelers are discovering the hidden treasures of the Oregon Coast. Today, the motel serves as a dedicated Lewis and Clark interpretive view point and regularly enjoys full occupancy in the summer as well as becoming a popular meeting space for local clubs and organizations in the community. The business has grown its workforce from two employees to 15 as well as tripling its annual revenues since its rebranding. Doyle was recognized as the 2019 SBA Portland District Small Business Person of the Year as president/CEO of Cal-Cert Calibration Certification company located in Milwaukie, Oregon.

From the Owners

"Businesses don't fail because of what you know - businesses fail because of what you don't know. We drew on each other's experience to work through them" - Don West

“Without the training, networking and funding the SBA supports, many of us would not make it.” - Marshall Doyle
