Cooper River Cycles Spins to Success

Gage Cooper

Cooper River Cycles is a full service bicycle shop that sells all styles of bicycles including beach cruisers, comfort hybrid bikes, road bikes, and mountain bikes.  Additionally, the business provides bike rentals and a full line of bicycle accessories.  Owned and operated by Gage Cooper, Cooper River Cycles is located in the bicycle friendly community of Daniel Island.  The island is experiencing rapid growth and is designed with walking paths and bike trails which allows the community to bike to school, shopping, and other activities.

Gage grew up in Mt. Pleasant, SC and worked in local bicycle shops as a teenager through his college years.  After obtaining a business degree, Gage decided that he wanted to open his own bike shop.  He recognized the unfilled demand on Daniel Island and started working on the business concept in 2014.  While doing research online, he found the resources of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).  He contacted the SBDC and with the help of SBDC Director, Darrell Jones, he prepared his business plan.  Darrell stated that he had a number of meetings with Gage and that he developed a comprehensive business plan that Gage has been able to use as an ongoing management tool.  “It is obvious by his success that it is really working for him” said Darrell.

When asked about the challenges of starting a business Gage replied that “there have been so many”!  He went on to say that for him, finding the proper balance and type of inventory was at the top of the list.  He added, “You always want to stock and sell what you want, but you have to recognize what the customers wants and needs are.”  Customer service is a top priority for Cooper River Cycles and the business competes with big box stores by providing quality products and a lifetime service for bicycles purchased.

Cooper River Cycles is active in the community donating bicycles to Bikes of the World, an organization that makes bicycles available to lower income people and select institutions in developing countries.  Gage also places a high priority on bicycle safety and conducts safety rodeos.  He participates with the Medical University of South Carolina’s “Safe kids” program and sponsored “Bike to School with a Cop Day” with the Charleston Police Department and the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association.

Cooper River Cycles has seen a successful start and is looking forward to the continued service of the biking needs of Daniel Island in the years to come.  Future plans include expanding safety development with local schools and creating a riding team for the community.
