‘Havin’ Fun Habitat’n’ in the Pacific Northwest

'Havin’ fun habitat’n' is how Kim Erion today describes her construction company’s approach to its work. Founded in 1993, LKE Corporation is a full-service construction company specializing in environmental reclamation, wildlife habitat enhancement, wetland development, and watershed restoration. Erion knew back then that getting her foot in the door in the highly competitive and established construction industry would pose some difficult challenges and knew she could use some help.

She turned to Portland SCORE to get the counseling and training to help her run her business with confidence. As the company grew, Erion enrolled in programs like the Portland Community College Small Business Development Center’s (SBDC) Level 3 Business Management course and the SBA Emerging Leaders Program to prepare for the firm’s expanding opportunities. In 2017, LKE graduated from the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, a nine-year government contracting certification to provide a level playing field for small businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged people or entities.

Today, LKE has completed more than 1,000 miles of watershed restoration; 112 major instream restorations including the Toutle River in Washingtion, Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, miles of channels and hundreds of acres of wetlands for clients such as the U.S. Navy and Army Corps of Engineers. In fact, the company has been awarded more than 200 federal contracts of which 180 were for environmental restoration. The company’s success has allowed Erion to offer her 35 team members a comprehensive benefit package which includes competitive base pay, health insurance, and a 401(k) plan. Erion was recognized as the 2019 SBA
Portland District 8(a) Graduate of the Year.

From the Owner

“LKE is truly 'Havin’fun habitat’n' which is when we are in the field doing what we love for the environment,” LKE Corporation President and Lead Ecologist Kim Erion said. “That success is only because of the great support and guidance from the SBA, our amazing crew and staff, and my dearest husband who believes in my vision and mission.”
