SBA Names 2013 Washington state Family-owned Small Business of the Year
SEATTLE – The U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 2013 Washington state Family-owned Small Business of the Year is The H.O. Seiffert Company (HOSCO) located in Everett, Wash. Since 1901, this four generation family-owned company has operated in Everett and greater Snohomish County. With much of its history in the building materials industry, HOSCO currently owns and manages three Everett Downtown Storage locations, as well as other multi-family and commercial real estate investments.
Accepting the award on behalf of the company is President Pat Sievers. “It is an honor to accept this award on behalf of the company, its employees and those family members who came before me,” Sievers said.
The SBA Seattle District Office has chosen Sievers and HOSCO as the best family-owned small business because the company has been successful for more than a century while serving the community. Sievers is involved in the local Rotary clubs, YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County. “We are so excited to honor the long-standing history of a four-generation family-owned small business like The H.O. Seiffert Company,” said SBA Seattle District Office Director Nancy Porzio.
“Pat Sievers and The H.O. Seiffert Company embody the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in so many Washington state family-owned businesses,” said SBA Regional Administrator Calvin Goings.
The Family-owned Small Business of the Year award honors a family-owned and operated business which has been passed on from one generation to another with at least a 15-year track record. The honoree also possesses a demonstrated history of success with growth in sales and profits, increased employment opportunities for family members, potential for future growth and volunteer efforts to strengthen family-owned businesses in the community.
Recently, the Washington Secretary of State recognized HOSCO as a “Century Corporation”, having the distinction of maintaining active corporate status in Washington state for 100 years. For 75 years, the company operated in the retail and wholesale lumber and building material business. In 1975, they started leasing company property and warehouse space. In 2008, the company purchased a vacant 48,000 square foot warehouse in Everett’s industrial core and subsequently renovated it into a 96,000 square foot self-storage facility supported by a $2.5 million SBA 504 loan. “With the help of the SBA and its partners Coastal Community Bank and Evergreen Business Capital, securing long term financing on this project has had a significant impact on our family company and its future,” Sievers said.
Sievers and other Washington state SBA award recipients will be recognized for their achievements at the 2013 SBA Annual Small Business Awards Gala May 9 at the Museum of Flight.
