The Young Entrepreneur of the Year award is presented annually to recognize excellence and innovation within the SBA’s network of young entrepreneurs in Wyoming.  Selection criteria includes: evidence of success as measured by sales and profits, increased employment opportunities, development and utilization of innovative business methods and demonstrated entrepreneurial potential for long-term success, all before the age of thirty (30)!

Derek was nominated by Doran Fluckiger, Regional Director for the Wyoming Small Business Development Center.  Derek utilized the services of the Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Market Research Center stating, “the SBDC was the steroid we needed to grow early on.”

Johnson spent fourteen months testing recipes in order to make his perfect donut.  Derek’s perfect donuts garnered Cowboy Donuts international attention when they competed for the best donut on the “Doughnut Showdown” a show sponsored by the Food Network.

Cowboy Donuts currently employs eleven individuals and continues to experience strong revenue growth.  Amy Lea, District Director says, “This award honors the accomplishments of young entrepreneurs like Derek.  SBA is proud to recognize Derek’s commitment to his business and community and hope this award is an inspiration for others.”
