Steven Despain retired on April 27, 2013 after 26 years of service to the U.S. Small Business Administration in the Wyoming District Office.  For the last 16 years, he served as the District Director.  Prior to his federal government service, he spent 24 years working in small business in the private sector, bringing his total career in small business to more than 50 years.  Steve was raised in Jackson Hole and holds bachelors and masters degrees in business from the University of Wyoming.

Under Steve’s leadership, the SBA Wyoming District Office reported 2,475 approved 7(a) and 504 loans, totaling over half a billion dollars ($594,501,000) in access to capital that small businesses used to start, grow, and succeed.

Steve kept his focus on small businesses throughout his entire career, spending his last day in the office signing the 2013 National Small Business Week awards to recognize excellence in small business in Wyoming.  Steve said, “I will miss the small business people and resource partners I’ve worked with over the years.  Wyoming folks are pretty great.”

Wyoming District Office Deputy District Director Amy Lea, said “Steve is such a humble leader that our team had to wait until after he retired in order to send out this press release.  He is masterful at working in quiet, behind-the-scenes ways for the benefit of small businesses, never caring about who receives the credit.  The impacts of his leadership in the Agency, both at the national level and within Wyoming, will be felt by small businesses for many years to come.”
