Washington Metropolitan Area District Office (WMADO) Small Business Week Awards Program

2019 Small Business Awards Information for SBA's Washington Metropolitan Area District Office (updated 1/28/19)

In recognition of the small business community’s vital contributions to the American economy, the President of the United States designates one week each year as National Small Business Week (NSBW). In 2019, NSBW will be held from Sunday, May 5 through Saturday, May 11. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) takes a lead role in organizing, publicizing, and celebrating National Small Business Week.

A highlight of this annual series of events is the presentation of the Small Business Awards, a program that recognizes the outstanding achievements of local entrepreneurs and those community-based service organizations dedicated to facilitating their success. Awards are presented in several categories and at various levels, including local, state, regional, and national.

The SBA Washington Metropolitan Area District Office (WMADO) invites your participation in the Small Business Awards nomination process. Because WMADO’s service territory includes all of the District of Columbia, Suburban Maryland (Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties) and Northern Virginia (Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties; and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church), WMADO annually selects three Small Business Persons of the Year: one from DC, one from Suburban Maryland and one from Northern Virginia. The Washington Metropolitan Area District Office also selects a Small Business Exporter of the Year and an 8(a) Graduate of the Year.

Small Business Persons of the Year from Suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia go on to compete, respectively, at the state level against winners identified by the Baltimore and Richmond District Offices. State winners continue to compete at the national level. Winners from the District of Columbia automatically progress to the next level of competition. The Washington Metropolitan Area District Office will host an awards ceremony in early May 2019 to recognize all its local winners. Nomination documents and related information can be found at www.sba.gov/nsbw. The SBA Form 3300 (Award Nominee Background Form) must be completed by each individual being nominated, all members of teams being nominated, and the official representative of any small business being nominated for a Small Business Award.
