Westborough-based E.L. Harvey & Sons Wins SBA Family-Owned Business Award
BOSTON – E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc., a Westborough-based family-owned and operated waste removal and recycling company, has been named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2012 Jeffrey H. Butland Family-Owned Small Business award winner.
The Family-Owned Small Business of the Year Award is presented annually to a family-owned and operated business with a 15-year track record that has been passed on from at least one generation to another.
This nomination package was evaluated using the following criteria: (1) Evidence of success as measured by sales and profits. (2) Increased employment opportunities for family and non-family members. (3) Demonstrated potential for long-term business success and economic growth. (4) Voluntary efforts to strengthen family-owned businesses within the community. John E. Rainey, regional director of the Small Business Development Center at Clark University, nominated E.L. Harvey for this award.
E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc. celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011 and currently employs three generations of family members. This full service waste hauling, transfer, and recycling operation employs over 250 people. In 1971 the company entered into the growing field of commercial and industrial waste removal and disposal services which supports the company’s goal to recycle as much as possible out of the waste stream. The company has received numerous industry and community based awards, including the MassRecyle Ribbon Friend, and Environmental Industry Association’s “Hall of Fame” and “Distinguished Service Award”. E.L. Harvey is a good corporate citizen and supports numerous charities.
“Our judging committee thought that E.L. Harvey was the perfect fit for this award,” said SBA Massachusetts District Director Robert H. Nelson. “This 100 year old company has been passed from generation to generation and has reinvented itself several times along the way. E.L. Harvey is now a well-respected “green” business and pioneer in the recycling trash.”
E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc. will be honored at an event at Fenway Park on June 6, 2012.
