Why the interest in locally produced foods? The production of local food has evolved into a strategy for growing the local economy in areas surrounding southwestern Pennsylvania. This has resulted in special programs developed to support local food producers. Supply chains for food have become longer and more complex, food security and safety concerns are becoming increasingly important. Local food production can be a viable source of local jobs. Topics to be discussed: •Barriers to increased production and value added sales. •Available capital to expand existing food enterprises or to start new ones. •Educating consumers on the value of buying locally. •Warehousing products. •Need for regional coordination/marketing mechanism. •Increasing production if other markets or channels were available. •How does FSMA affect you? •Conducting market research about food products. •Conducting research regarding aspects of food. •Do you promote food as medicine?
