Every year, the Federal government procures supplies and/or services to the tune of several hundred billion dollars. Many of those procurements are earmarked for smaller businesses. If you own a small business and have the potential to sell your products to the Federal government you ought to take the time to learn about these programs. Small business certifications are like professional certifications; they document a special capability or status that will help you compete in the marketplace. Unlike permits and licenses, you do not need to obtain certifications to legally operate. However, in order to take advantage of business opportunities, such as government contracts, you may need to obtain some certifications. At Federal level, our government is mandated to reserve a sizable percentage of all procurement dollars for small businesses, for certified socio-economically disadvantaged small businesses, for women-owned small businesses or for businesses located in Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone). SBA manages several of these certifications. Certifying your business can definitely help you successfully compete for government contracts. A representative of the SBA North Florida District Office, Ed Ramos alongside the UCF Florida Small Business Development Center Government Contracting specialists (PTAC), will co-host the following presentations: • 8 (a) Business Development Program; • Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) Program; • Women Owned Small Business (WOSB) Program; • New SBA Mentor Protégé program. These presentations are offered at NO- COST and hosted by the Florida SBDC at UCF, an SBA resource partner.
