“It’s such a great privilege to recognize the achievements of leading eastern Pennsylvania exporters like Henrik,” said Antonio (Tony) Leta, U.S. SBA Eastern Pennsylvania Director. “Klinge Corporation is an outstanding example of a small business that starts and grows through over 30 years of exporting success in the global market. SBA resource partners like Kutztown University SBDC provide invaluable assistance to small businesses looking to export and can help them access export assistance programs, such as SBA’s STEP Grant program and U.S. Commercial Service, that help U.S. businesses achieve exporting successes all over the world.”

Klinge Corporation is the leading manufacturer of specialized transport refrigeration, freezing, and power generation equipment in the world. Klinge serves several industries including: pharmaceutical; chemical and dangerous goods; bulk liquids; seafood and meat processing; military; and oil and gas. Klinge offers dual refrigerated containers, explosion-proof refrigerated containers (ATEX certified), refrigerated tank containers, blast freezers, -65 °C/-85°F ultralow temperature units, and quick-thaw units. Klinge Corporation was founded in 1984 as a spin-off of the Transport Refrigeration Equipment Department of York International. Klinge has maintained and built on the high standards set by York International while constantly expanding their range of products.

For Klinge Corporation, exporting is not an afterthought, new business initiative or a vague future venture. Klinge has been an international company since its founding in 1984, exporting to more than 18 countries represents 80% of Klinge's total sales. Major overseas markets are the European Union, China, South Africa, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Colombia and Australia. These results are remarkable for any small business, the more so given the nature of the Klinge's products – high tech, capital equipment requiring an ongoing commitment to innovation, marketing and managing cash flow for the ebbs and flows of demand and working capital expenses.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized as SBA’s Exporter of the Year,” said Henrik Klinge, Director, Klinge Corporation. “We’re honored that Martin and Kutztown SBDC nominated us and that SBA chose our company. The support from the SBA, the SBDC, U.S. Commercial Service and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over the years helped us because we would not survive, grow or thrive without exports.”

Henrik Klinge began his career in 1971, starting as a part-time installer and test engineer for container refrigeration in numerous places in the US and abroad. In 1978, he began heading the engineering and development departments in Klinge Corporation for transport refrigeration. At this time, Klinge was also appointed as the Danish member of the ISO committee to develop, draft and obtain approval for the ISO standard 1496-2 for refrigerated containers as well as ISO 10368 for standardization of the remote monitoring of reefer containers onboard oceangoing vessels. In 1981 Klinge became Sales Manager for Container Transport Refrigeration Worldwide and in 1986 he took over as owner and president of Klinge Corporation in York, Pa. He continues to work in development and creation of new transport refrigeration units. He has given lectures on repair and maintenance of this special equipment worldwide. His son, Allan Klinge, began work at Klinge Corporation in 2007 and is now owner and president.

“I’m thrilled to see Klinge Corporation win SBA Exporter of the Year for 2018. I was honored to nominate them and, in my humble opinion, the nomination was long overdue because exporting is simply part and parcel of the Klinge corporate culture,” said nominator Martin Brill, Program Manager, International Trade, Kutztown University Small Business Development Center. “Their reputation for innovation, quality, customer service and on-time delivery is world class. Their strong competitive spirit and international approach is a model any multi-national would hope to emulate.” The Kutztown University SBDC has worked with Klinge Corporation since before Brill began working for the SBDC more than 20 years ago.

Klinge Corporation has utilized various services of the Kutztown University SBDC for over 20 years. The SBDC has been a source of research and marketing reports, including a student research project with the senior capstone international business class at Elizabethtown College with the SBDC. In addition, Klinge has used the expertise of the SBDC's Procurement Technical Assistance Center. This service compiles applicable government procurement opportunities for the Transport Refrigeration industry, which saves time in screening bids and helps the firm focus on the most viable sales opportunities with the U.S. government. On numerous occasions, the firm has used the Gold Key Services of the U.S. Commercial Service to help with market intelligence, trade shows, tariffs & non-tariff barriers and new sales contacts.
