“It’s a privilege to recognize the achievements of leading Pennsylvania entrepreneurs like Matthew,” said John Fleming, Acting U.S. SBA Eastern Pennsylvania Director. “Small businesses like Green Lawn Fertilizing/Green Pest Solutions, that are able to thrive in the long-term, are essential to our nation’s economy. SBA and our resource and lending partners, like Sherwood Robbins of Seedcopa, are proud to play a role in helping them start and succeed.”

“We are honored to nominate Matthew,” said nominator Sherwood Robbins, Managing Director, Seedcopa. “His company has grown steadily and dramatically with assistance from the SBA 504 loan program and we’re proud to be a part of that.” Seedcopa helps businesses get the money they need to start, grow and expand and is proud the loan programs they work with promote economic development. Together with economic development partners throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware, Seedcopa helps local businesses grow, create and retain jobs while stimulating growth within their communities.

Recognizing that client retention is the most significant factor for continued growth and success in the industry Jesson formed his professional, regional lawn fertilizing services business in 2004 with a company-wide philosophy of customer service and professionalism to maintain clients from year-to-year. The firm’s success in retaining clients and expanding through marketing and word-of-mouth has led to over 25,000 current customers and a tripling of revenue in the last nine years. As part of the firm’s growth, employment has increased dramatically from 38 employees in 2009 to more than 180 employees today. Employee turnover levels are low compared to the general industry as Jesson works hard to recruit and retain strong employees through a concerted effort geared toward compensation and advancement opportunity. The business prides itself on paying good wages to all team members.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized as SBA’s Entrepreneurial Success of the Year,” said Matthew Jesson, President and Owner, Green Lawn Fertilizing/Green Pest Solutions. “We’re honored that Seedcopa nominated us and that SBA chose our company. The support from the SBA and Seedcopa helped us purchase and renovate our current building in West Chester.”

Jesson feels charitable activities help develop a team-centric atmosphere for employees, who participate on company time at company cost. Each year, employees are sent to Arlington National Cemetery to participate in a ceremony and perform lawn fertilization and service work to help maintain a dignified and manicured resting site for the service members interred there. The company serves as a volunteer organization for Habitat for Humanity of Chester County, Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia and to other community organizations such as La Mancha Animal Shelter in Coatesville, PA and the Chester County Food Bank. They also participate in Toys for Tots and support employee’s individual community service projects, such as youth sports leagues through charitable donations.

SBA’s Eastern Pennsylvania Entrepreneurial Success of the Year award winner is selected annually from among nominees located across Pennsylvania’s eastern 40 counties. These events are local observances of the annual Presidentially-designated National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week recognizes the small business community’s contribution to the American economy.
