SBA Michigan District Recognizes Fiscal Year 2018 Lenders Who Helped SBA Guarantee over $813 Million in the State Lenders Honored during National Small Business Week May 5-11

DETROIT – The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Michigan District Office has named its fiscal year 2018 lender awards in recognition of their help to give small businesses the access to capital they need. Huntington National Bank is the Michigan Lender of the Year for the best overall performance based on volume, increases in dollar amount, area coverage, and participation in SBA programs and community activities. Huntington National Bank originated 1,425 7a loans totaling over $194 million in fiscal 2018. This is the 10th year in a row that Huntington Bank has won this prestigious award. Other finalists included Independent Bank, Chemical Bank, and Chase Bank. 

“Our lending partners play a critical role in helping small businesses and entrepreneurs get the financing they need to start, grow and expand their businesses,” said Constance Logan, SBA Michigan District Director.  “We are pleased to recognize their commitment to growing Michigan’s economy.”

Also recognized this year is The State Bank as the Community Lender of the Year. This award is given for best overall performance among Michigan-based, non-preferred lenders and is based on total volume, new market activity, and comparison with historical performance. The State Bank originated 43 SBA-backed loans totaling $21 million. 

Other award winners include Level One Bank as the Business Development Lender of the Year.  This award goes to the institution with the largest increase in SBA-backed loan approvals. In fiscal 2018, Level One Bank showed strong growth with a 78% increase in the number of loans.

Independent Bank was named the 504 Third Party Lender of the Year. This award is given in recognition of the best overall support of SBA’s 504 loan program. Independent Bank originated three 504 Third Party loans for almost $1.4 million.

Huntington National Bank was selected as the Diversity Lender of the Year, with 26% of all of its SBA-backed lending going to underserved markets, including minorities, women, and veterans.

mBank was named the Diversity Community Lender of the Year for support of diverse small businesses, including minorities, women, and veterans, with 39% of its SBA-backed lending going to these underserved markets.

The Export Finance Lender of the Year award was presented to Oxford Bank for outstanding commitment to helping small businesses reach international markets through the use of SBA-backed Export loan programs.

United Federal Credit Union was named the Credit Union Lender of the Year for support of SBA-backed lending with seven SBA 7a loans totaling for $1.6 million.

In two new Lender Award categories for the Michigan District Office, Northern Initiatives was named Micro lender of the Year and Michigan Certified Development Company was named Certified Development Company of the Year. The Micro Lender of the Year award is given to the best overall performance by an SBA micro lender in Michigan.  Northern Initiatives helped small businesses with 23 microloans throughout the state.

The CDC of the Year recognizes best overall performance by a certified development company in Michigan.  Michigan Certified Development Company was awarded because it originated 90 transactions totaling over $59 million.

The top ten best performing 7(a) lenders in Michigan are based on number of loans approved. The data is compiled by SBA.
