Going Green and Global - Yumi EcoSolutions, Inc.,

From Plastics to Corn and Bamboo Made Products

As the founder and CEO, Virginia P’an has a long term global vision for Yumi EcoSolutions, Inc. That is to create a healthier world now and for future generations by replacing the plastics with eco-friendly natural green products made from corn and bamboo.

In 2010,  Virginia P’an incorporated Yumi  EcoSolutions , Inc. and started the houseware and tabletop products business with her husband Albert P’an in Norwalk, CT. Yumi means  “corn” in Chinese and “beautiful” in Japanese. In July,  2012, Yumi EcoSolutions, Inc.  received the Small Business Express Loan of $250,000 with a matching grant of $100,000 from the State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Working with partners in China, P’an developed two main products of new innovative materials of corn and bamboo, that are sold now in more than a thousand retail stores in 26 states across the country and abroad.

The 1st main product line is called Yumi Return®. It is a replacement for paper and plastic tableware, the plates and other kitchen items you may use for picnics or barbecues, then toss. Yumi Return® products are made from non-GMO corn and starch. “They are affordable and made with exceptional quality. They are microwave safe, durable, biodegradable, compostable, renewable, sustainable. It is ”The throwaway that goes away®,” P’an says. The 2nd main product line is called Yumi Nature+™ and Yumi Art+™  that are made from 100 percent natural bamboo. Bamboo products are renewable, durable, sustainable, biodegradable, melamine-free, and petroleum-free. In March 2015, Yumi EcoSolution Inc has ten of its bamboo fiber products featured in the Hall of Global Innovation, Going Green exhibit at the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago. Among 2,100 exhibitors from 45 countries, Yumi was the only company at the show that exclusively sold innovative green and eco-friendly home and tableware products. Connecticut Technology Council has selected Yumi EcoSolutions, Inc. as a Tech Company to Watch and to participate in the 2015 Innovation Summit. P’an also won 2016 TownVibe Green Awards for Fairfield Magazines.

Back to early 2014, Virgina P’an contacted John Xu, District International Trade Officer at SBA Connecticut District Office for export counseling and trade finance. Xu visited the company and met with Virgina and Albert P’an. Xu advised them on export planning, market research, international sales and marketing strategies, and introduced SBA export counseling services and international trade loan programs including Exim bank export credit insurance policy program for small exporters, and SBA STEP grant program. As a result, Yumi products are now sold in Mexico, Bermuda, Puerto Rico and UAE. The biggest international buyer for Yumi products is Soriana/City Club (equivalent to Walmart+Costco) which is an $8 billion publicly traded company in Mexico. In Aug, 2015, Yumi EcoSolutions, Inc. received additional Small Business Express Loan of $50,000 from DECD to further spur growth. Recently, the firm applied for STEP grant of $3000 to upgrade its website through DECD.

Virginia P’an’ s career path has been crowned of  many “firsts” as a global leader and a woman entrepreneur, such as being the first woman vice president at American Express Bank, the first female advisor to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Taiwan banking industry, the first woman worldwide to manage investment portfolios of seven billion dollars, and the first female Chinese-American professional on Wall Street.
