Jonal Laboratories has increased exports in a technically demanding industry as a small business, relying almost exclusively on a non-retail, custom-part driven model.  Jonal currently ships to 14 countries with an increasing trend line. The Japanese market is Jonal’s top export country; its continual growth demonstrates their ability to meet evolving customer-based needs. Furthermore, their success is the result of years of hard-focused work. It took almost 50 years of business decisions to get to a point where the for the last 40 years, this family-owned American manufacturing has been making great products for one of the world’s premiere military and commercial aerospace engine makers. In 2006, it was time to decide the way forward for the next 40 years. Do you stay the course you are on—making engines parts for one or two primary customers? Do you take the risk of trying to grab on to the potential of the industry you are in and go after new opportunities? Marc knew from 30 years of leadership that companies are always evolving, but not always for the betterment of the team and customers. Marc chose to chase the potential, initially positioning Jonal to become a supplier to the companies in the airframe sector of the industry.

That decision to expand in 2006 had the immediate effect of shifting the perspective of Team Jonal. The importance of this shift cannot be overstated. That decision, when communicated to the team, opened the team to new possibilities and to new ways of looking at the industry. Most significantly, it brought a greater sense of purpose and an assurance that Marc trusted the team; he believed that they were more than capable of taking on new customers and new opportunities.

This decision also began to shape the faint outline of a new plan to grow. This vision forced Jonal to look inward first--to completely understand the true value Jonal brings to the aerospace industry. Then then proceeded by defining the scope of the aerospace industry through extensive market research and then determining the resources needed to expand and grow; to become a “go to” source for elastomeric seals for all aerospace applications.

This led to another fundamental decision. Growth would mean expanding business both domestically and internationally. It was not based on return on investment models or consultant opinions.  They were aware of the essential nature of expanding their business in the aerospace sector—staying status quo was not an option. From this decision a vision was born to “go global” and the vision was shared across team Jonal.

Over the past 10 years they have driven their export sales to over 15% of the total sales resulting in job growth and the design and manufacture of new products. Jonal works with the Connecticut Export Office in Middletown to support their export sales.  They have participated in numerous trade missions, training sessions and procurement events sponsored by the US DOC and SBDC.

Marc Nemeth is a business and community leader in Meriden and in Connecticut.  He has served or currently serves on Chamber boards, not for profit boards and the regional hospital board.  He has been appointed by the US Secretary of Commerce to serve on the Connecticut District Export Council. In 2016 Marc Nemeth received the U.S. Small Business Administration's Exporter of the Year Award!
