Green Solutions Equal Global Success

Jacksonville, FL – Dr. Amir Varshovi, President of Green Technologies, LLC (GreenTechnologies), was selected as the 2014 North Florida District and State of Florida Small Business Person of the Year. GreenTechnologies was started by Dr. Amir A Varshovi in his garage in 1999, and he has since grown the business to a 25-acre manufacturing facility in Jacksonville, Florida, and is in the process of building a 23-acre facility in Lakeland, Florida. GreenTechnologies’ core focus is extracting and recycling nutrients from the water treatment process for the development of sustainable slow release fertilizers that are environmentally conscious.

Dr. Varshovi emigrated from Iran when he was 18 years old, and set out to accomplish the American dream by working several jobs to pay for college and support his family. Dr. Varshovi received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of South Florida, and then his Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Florida. During his time at the University of Florida, he also worked as a Research Scientist in the Soil and Water Science Department. As a researcher, he conducted efficacy research on commercial fertilizers, and their impact on the environment.

It was the combination of his expertise and his respect for the environment that compelled Dr. Varshovi to start GreenTechnologies.  Since forming GreenTechnologies, Dr. Varshovi has developed processes and patents for the production of environmentally sound fertilizers utilizing sustainable and renewable nutrients from the water treatment process. The Company developed and branded the Greenedge® line of slow release fertilizers, which are used for retail and commercial purposes such as landscaping, agriculture, golf courses, and sports fields. GreenEdge can be purchased at or at local garden centers such as Ace Hardware stores.

Dr. Varshovi is recognized as an industry and community leader. He is a member of the Florida Water Environment Association (a preservation society), and received the Association’s award for biosolids management in 2013 and Public Outreach in 2014.  GreenTechnologies also has been recognized by Grow Florida and received an award as Florida Companies to Watch in 2012. Dr. Varshovi contributes financially and with his time to various community and science-based activities.  His commitment to give back to the community is far reaching and includes hiring economically disadvantaged persons and veterans.

Dr. Varshovi has grown GreenTechnologies over the course of the past four years through the help of the SBA and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of North Florida. The company has doubled the number of its employees over the past four years, and plans on creating an additional ten jobs over the next two to three years. Sales have grown from $100,000 a year when the Company started to over $2 million, due in part to the Company’s focus on exporting.

Dr. Varshovi  participated in the SBA’s 3-year pilot State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Program, a trade and export initiative authorized by the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010.  Funded by federal grants and matching funds from the states, the STEP Program is designed to help increase the number of small businesses that are exporting and to raise the value of exports for those small businesses that are currently exporting.  The SBDC office at the University of North Florida developed an Export Marketing Plan specifically designed for GreenTechnologies which has greatly aided the company in its export markets.

SBA offers small businesses assistance with exporting through its Office of International Trade. Information on the STEP program or other exporting initiatives is available at For more information about programs and services available through the SBDC at the University of North Florida, visit
