Woman-Owned Business in Construction and Engineering

Sheryl Page, President and CEO Page One Consultants

Orlando, FLA. – Sheryl Page, President and CEO of Page One Consultants, Inc. (POC) was recently named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 2017 State of Florida Woman-Owned Small Business Person of the Year. Page has tripled revenues in 2 years and has also hired 30 additional team members in that time. The company has also acquired 13 new vehicles and nearly doubled the square footage.

Page, originally from upstate New York lived in various places growing up as result of her father’s job. She eventually settled in Florida and attended Miami-Dade Community College and then went to DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. She majored in business with a minor in accounting, while working full-time for a commercial lender as a Treasury Service Officer. After graduation, Page relocated to the Orlando area and worked as an Office Manager for an engineering firm. It was during that time that Page realized she enjoyed engineering and construction and hope to become an entrepreneur herself someday.

Page eventually started POC in 1993 after realizing there was a shortage of women-owned firms in the construction industry in Central Florida. POC is an Orlando, Florida based construction, project management, and engineering consulting firm. The company tests soil, concrete, masonry grout, fire-proofing, and asphalt material for several area government entities. Additionally, POC provides independent third-party testing and inspection services for buildings, roadways, bridges, parking areas, and other structures. Page initially worked with several local municipalities to start identifying opportunities for the firm. Currently, the firm provides services to organizations such as the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, Central Florida Expressway Authority, Florida Department of Transportation, and others.

Page initially utilized 15 credit cards to help the company stay in business in the early days. In 2001 she received a 7(a) SBA guaranteed loan in the amount of $250,000 through BankFirst (now SeaCoast Bank). The company was able to grow and build a more robust clientele as result with the injection of cash flow, and has since paid the loan back in full. Visit the SBA website for more information on loan and lending products.

SBA works with several resource partners to counsel, train, and outreach to local small business owners.  Over the years, Page has worked with SBA resource partners including SCORE and more recently the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University of Central Florida. Page currently utilizes the SBDC for technical assistance, mentoring, and counseling. The company has grown significantly as a result of the continued support from the SBDC.

Page has been recognized by local media as a Top Woman-Owned Business and continues to provide leadership to her company. She is also an active member of her community, and provides support to many causes including city missions, schools, and churches. Her advice to entrepreneurs is “Keep your faith and be patient. Don’t give up…Don’t quit!”
