Slogan Success Opens Avenues for Lake Worth Owner to Capture the Beauty of Haiti and Beyond

Small business owner Diana Pierre-Louis
Small business owner Diana Pierre-Louis initially learned of the hidden jewels of Haiti – untouched areas, a beautiful culture, and warm, friendly people from listening to stories told by her husband and country-native, Endy.  After setting eyes on the country which is often portrayed as impoverished, the then-digital marketing specialist was determined to share all she could about the beauty of the country where her husband was born and raised.  "All I wanted to do was show people the beauty of what I experienced; now it has grown to be much more than I could've ever imagined.”

When the opportunity arose, Diana entered the Ministry of Tourism of Haiti’s contest to find a new slogan for their website; and to her surprise, her winning submission “Experience It” was then translated in Creole to “Se la pou’w la” to capture the emotions of first time visitors.

With her husband’s assistance and the desire to open a business that would match her skills as a digital marketing specialist, while highlighting her passion for helping people and exposing the beauty and truth of this island gem; Diana launched The Real Haiti website.

“While I was employed at Palm Beach State College, I had the pleasure of hearing how the SBDC counselors helped entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses; and I knew they were the best organization for me," Diana said. "They helped me identify areas I was not aware of and set-up strategies to help me expand my on-line presence and photographic skills.”

With Diana’s blog succeeding, more and more inquiries began arriving. Requests came in for photography, website design, graphics, social media tips, and more, and working at her full-time job was beginning to become a challenge. “I know it sounds cliché, but if it weren’t for the help of the Florida SBDC, I would not be where I am today.”

Diana knew she wanted to expand her successful blog into a full-blown social media and marketing company, and thanks to the services and support of the Florida SBDC, she was able to achieve her goal of working full-time in a business she is passionate about and that could sustain her financially. Thus, Empower Your Brand, a full-service marketing and branding company, was born.

“The knowledge that the staff has to offer to small business owners is invaluable. Not only do [consultants] Phil and Debbie provide me [with] useful information to run my business, they also encourage me and cheer me on. I am so thankful for them and am comforted knowing they are just around the corner or a phone call away if I need them.”

Professional successes quickly followed. In one year, Diana won the contract from Broward College to manage the social media and online promotion for the Gubernatorial Debates and was also chosen as the photographer for Florida Atlantic University’s College of Nursing advertising campaign, which included both billboards and print materials. She was also hired to develop a website for a medical clinic and now provides branding expertise to various professionals in the medical field including health educators, nurse practitioners, and the like. “They truly trust what I do, and I love helping them because they are busy caring for other people.

With the increase of business, she was able to employ three part-time assistants to help with the increase in volume, and is looking forward to revising her business model in the future.

“My husband and I recently started our family, so the flexibility of outsourcing certain jobs while working from home, around the baby’s schedule has been perfect,” said Diana. “I have also added a “mom-preneur” member-only section on Empower Your Brand for mothers to share what works in raising a family, things that can be beneficial to working mothers and ways to balance your family and business.”

“I would advise anyone in need of assistance to go to the SBDC! They will keep you focused and on track, and give you honest feedback,” Diana said. “They are my rock!”
