Marine Captain Reignites Commitment to Service through Franchise Ownership

Veterans represent a vital part of our nation’s population, workforce and business community.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2012 Survey of Business Owners (SBO) – veteran business owners represented an estimated 9.1% of all business owners (2.52 million) with an annual payroll of $195 billion and receipts of $1.14 trillion[1].  Another study conducted by the International Franchise Association cited that one out of every seven franchise businesses are owned and operated by veterans.[2]

Veterans such as Dave Adams are part of an increasing trend of military personnel who are returning home and transitioning back to civilian life with business ownership.

A Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Dave Adams finished his service after nearly a decade as a commissioned officer, both as a leadership instructor and an assault amphibian platoon commander.  After rejoining civilian life, Dave’s entrepreneurial spirit, leadership, education, and desire to serve others – led him to owning and operating several AFC urgent care centers.

Founded by Dr. Bruce Irwin with a single location in 1982, American Family Care pioneered the concept of non-emergency room urgent care – with over 200 clinics and 600 in-network physicians caring for more than 3 million patients a year.

In September of 2012, Adams opened his first AFC urgent care location in Waltham with assistance from SBA financing.  Over the past five years this business has grown faster than any other stand-alone AFC franchise owned by a single person across Massachusetts.

In its first full calendar year of operation, the business' eleven employees treated nearly 10,000 patients in the Waltham area in just under 4,000 square feet.  Since that time the business has grown substantially, opening second, third and fourth locations in Burlington (2014), Stoneham (2016) and Bedford (2017) Massachusetts respectively.  As of January 2018 the business now operates four locations across a profitable network with its 61 employees in approximately 16,000 square feet. In 2017 the business treated nearly 60,000 patients across its 4-unit urgent care network in Massachusetts and nearly 200,000 patients since its establishment in 2012.

Healthcare Cost Saving for FamiliesFamily
Today, the business has grown and flourished due to the focus on operational excellence led by Adams.  AFC to date has treated over two hundred thousand patients, delivering convenient and efficient care – with no appointments necessary and all insurances accepted.

Over the past five years, Adams has developed great pride in his business as a result of the high-quality care being provided by AFC to thousands of families in the Greater Boston area at more affordable prices.  According to medical expenditure studies published, the average visit to an emergency room averages $1354, while a visit to an urgent care center costs less than $150.  Healthcare cost savings are being passed along to families at a much lower rate for the same quality of care received in the Emergency Room or through other less convenient forms of care.

Additionally, the company has employed nearly a dozen veterans over the past five years from all four main  branches of the military, ranging in rank from E-3 (junior enlisted) to 0-5 (senior field-grade officer; and continues to seek qualified veterans interested in pursuing careers in healthcare to work for AFC.

2018 Veteran Small Business Owner of the Year
Captain Dave Adams was honored at the annual SCORE Boston/SBA Small Business Week Awards luncheon as the 2018 Veteran Small Business Owner of the Year – earning the recognition for extraordinary job creation with a focus on employment for veterans within a three year period.

“As a veteran myself, this is a huge honor for me, “said Adams.  “My relationship with the SBA enabled me to bring AFC’s high-quality care to the community as well as provide jobs to my fellow veterans.”

“Dave’s commitment to providing high-quality health care to his community reflects his dedication to supporting our country.   We are very proud to have him on our team, operating four of our 200 locations, “said American Family Care President Randy Johansen.

The company was nominated by Rick Parker, President at Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce.

SBA Franchise Directory
The SBA created an online franchise directory to streamline the process for entrepreneurs looking to access capital for purchasing a franchise business.  Its’ purpose is to serve as a central listing of pre-approved brands or franchisors that have been deemed eligible for financial assistance with SBA.

The eligibility status of the franchise brands in the directory are checked and cleared by the SBA, cutting the finance processing time and making it more efficient.   Once franchisors have filed the proper paperwork, lenders can process loans without further review of the franchise documents.

Potential franchises interested in being listed on the Directory should email copies of their Franchise Disclosure Document, the Franchise Agreement (or license or other type of agreement), and any other documents that the franchisor will require the franchisee to execute to
