About Us

About Our Office:

The goal of the Michigan District Office is to create an environment within Michigan where small business can grow and prosper. We do this by providing:

  • Free business counseling through the Michigan Small Business Development Centers, SCORE, Women Business Centers, and U.S. Export Assistance Centers.

  • Government contracting assistance

  • Low-cost training

  • Loan guaranty programs (SBA does not provide grants to individuals to start businesses).

For fiscal year 2018, Michigan lenders set a new record for 7a loans, with 2,550 approvals.  Total loans supported by the SBA in Michigan, including 504 third-party loans, were just shy of FY2017’s record, totaling $959 Million.  7a loans were down slightly from the previous year’s record at $714 Million.  Similarly, 504 loans were also down slightly, with $105 Million being approved.  This is consistent with historical trends, where SBA lending is reduced slightly during a long economic expansion.

Part of the success of SBA lending in Michigan in FY2018 was due to the introduction of Lender Match.   Lender Match is an SBA technology platform that gives entrepreneurs the ability to complete a quick online form, without registration or cost, and be connected with an approved SBA lender within 48 hours.

In addition, late in the fiscal year, the 504 program was enhanced with the introduction of the 25 year, fixed-rate bond.

There were 151 different lending institutions made at least one SBA loan in the state in 2018.
