Roadhouse Diner - Gourmet Burgers and Fresh Food Lead to Success of this Must-Visit Restaurant

Jason and Tara Beam grew up in Great Falls. They spent twenty years as working professionals, Jason in advertising as a graphic designer and marketing, and Tara as a registered nurse.  Jason’s early work experience in the restaurant business left a lasting impression, and he always knew he wanted to start his own restaurant.

That opportunity came in early 2015 when Tara contacted a realtor and surprised Jason with an impromptu viewing of a log cabin restaurant that was listed for sale, and the dream soon became a reality.

Jason and Tara received guidance and help with their business plan from the Great Falls SBDC and then started researching financing options.

“We approached SBA with a business idea from the ground up that was unique to our market.  We wanted to create a must-visit restaurant in Great Falls that featured fresh food made from Montana ingredients and wild, over-the-top burger creations that are often featured on cooking shows, but not seen in this area,” said Jason.

The proceeds from an SBA 504 loan allowed the couple to purchase the old log cabin restaurant building.

Roadhouse Diner’s gourmet burgers are served on fresh baked buns, served with house-made sauces, hand-cut fries and homemade desserts.  Jason and Tara are strong supporters of their community, choosing to shop locally for their food, supplies and services.

What has been their biggest challenge?  “The business started fast, growth was a big struggle,” said Tara.

Tara competed in a burger cooking challenge on the Food Network show Guy’s Grocery Games in 2017.  She won that challenge, taking home a prize of $12,000.  When the show aired on national television, people travelled to Great Falls just to visit the restaurant.

Jason and Tara Beam take pride in working side-by-side with their employees as a team and sharing in the successes of the Roadhouse Diner.  “Combining a solid marketing strategy, social media presence, consistent brand philosophy and hard work, we’ve more than doubled our annual sales in just four years.  We’ve paid off our SBA 504 loan in that time in addition to improving the building and land that we purchased,” they said.

"It’s very rewarding that Stockman Bank was able to guide Jason and Tara Beam thru their dream, and for the business to be so successful in reaching over and beyond their original projections," said Commercial Loan Officer Teri Anderson.

Roadhouse Diner was featured in Travel + Leisure Magazine as one of the Top 25 Diners in the United States, and received accolades for best Burger in Montana in 2017, and Best Burger in Great Falls.
