Sherwood Florist owner starts new chapter with help from SBDC & SCORE

BUFFALO, NY – Amy Sileo started working in her floral business at the age of 15.  She worked after school, weekends, vacations and holidays.  She learned techniques in prepping, cutting, floral design pricing and eventually purchased the business in February 2006.

Amy celebrated her 10-year anniversary last month.   “I love the people and making connections,” she says.  “It was important to me to work someplace that I admired, a place that felt like home.”

Although she quickly moved into running her own business, Amy knew the business needed to bloom!  Her space required an investment for renovations that would attract customers to the stores success and brand culture.  “I knew that remodeling my floral shop would be costly, but to my customers; they would see value in my product and brand,” she said.

A friend suggested she approach the U.S. Small Business Administration’s... Read More

Success is the Spice of Life for Owner of Greek Goddess Products

BUFFALO, NY – Like many foodpreuneurs before her, Evangeline Conley liked making her homemade salad dressing and marinade for her friends and family for special gatherings and occasions. Their positive reaction to the recipe gave her the motivation and idea to start her own business.

When Conley founded Greek Goddess Products, Inc. in 2008, she reached out early for guidance on how to get started.  She learned about the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Buffalo State College from a friend who suggested she start there.

“The first thing I did was take a course through the SBDC.  It was a start-up workshop allowing me the opportunity to learn about balance sheets, profits and loss, and ways to market my business,” says Conley.  “As a business owner, it’s so important to learn about managing your finances and how to approach legal fees and trademark laws.”

The Buffalo District office has four different SBDC locations around Western New York and Rochester... Read More

alpine made owner Kerry Beiter and one of her goats

Alpine Made Uses Straight Talk to Help Expand Business

All Kerry Beiter wanted to do was sell her goat milk products.  Lots of it.  And as the grand-daughter of a grandfather who owned and operated a cattle ranch and dairy farm, she certainly had the will.  Unplanned, though, was a visit to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) resource partner SCORE Buffalo Niagara that would end up having her attend SBA and SCORE’s Annual Straight Talk Conference.

“With new skincare product lines in mind, we needed to educate ourselves and learn about expansion; how to take it to the next level,” Kerry recalled.  Knowing where to turn, Kerry attended Straight Talk in 2013 followed by the Straight Talk Series.

“The contacts and guidance received at Straight Talk accelerated our projected growth and profitability,” says Kerry.  “I met with David Bunis from SCORE and Andrea Lizak from the Small Business Development Center at Buffalo State... Read More
