Gerald Neal learned in the Navy from the Corps of Engineers about construction. He holds a degree in computer engineering, but his partiality for construction overrode entering the computer field.

Neal is the owner of Neal’s Construction, LLC. Neal has two core values for business. Those core values are perseverance and staying the course. Neal is an 8(a) government contractor who has been in the program for eight years. He is slated to graduate next year from the program.

“If it were not for the 8(a) program my business would not be where it is,” said Neal. “The program helped me with understanding the federal contracting system in addition to contracting opportunities.

The 8(a) Business Development Program is a business assistance program for small disadvantaged businesses. The 8(a) program offers a broad scope of assistance to firms that are majority owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. Participants are in the program for nine years. The program continues to help thousands of entrepreneurs gain a foothold in government contracting.

In 2002 Neal formed the construction business as the sole employee. Now the firm employs eight people. In addition, the firm has completed approximately 100 projects ranging from residential to commercial. Neal’s Construction is an unlimited contractor with a focus on industrial, commercial, and residential construction projects.

“I faced the typical problem that most small businesses encounter and that is cash flow management. I was able to work through this issue by establishing a line of credit,” stated Neal.

“If someone is considering going into business they must possess patience, trust, and cannot be greedy.” “A business owner must have the ability to persevere through the tough times, because those times will come.” “In addition, having a good attorney and accountant is a needed benefit to properly operate a business,” said Neal.

“Owning a business has given me the opportunity to spend more time with my family. A business owner needs an understanding family to be successful,” stated Neal.
