Women Owned Video Production Company Grows and Thrives With SBA Assistance

Nashville, Tenn. Alba Gonzalez Nylander and Jennifer Goldstein Fritz started AJ Media Services (AJMS) as an outgrowth of their long tenure as seasoned broadcast video and editing professionals. Their 30 combined years of experience, top-notch skills and passion for media services led them to start their own company to serve government, businesses, universities and organizations nationwide with top video productions; including multicultural and bi-lingual media. Since launching in 2010, AJMS, a 100% woman-owned small business, has enjoyed a rich history of satisfying clients including the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), USDA, University of Notre Dame, Fort Lauderdale Fire and Rescue, Toyota Sports Center Los Angeles, Amazon, Cracker Barrel Country Store and Marriott Hotels and Resorts.

When they started in 2010, the SBA Tennessee District Office invited AJMS to attend its first Annual Veterans Conference being held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This afforded them the opportunity to meet with procurement representatives for potential to do business with the government and to learn about the benefits of certification. This led to AJMS attaining the opportunity to work with Oak Ridge Associated Universities on two different projects. Also, in June 2011, AJMS attended their first Procurement Summit at Tennessee State University where they met Sue Malone of Superior Financial Group. This meeting resulted in AJMS receiving a $7,000 SBA microloan.

Additionally, AJMS was a part of the first group of small businesses in Nashville to take the SBA Emerging Leaders Initiative. The SBA Emerging Leaders Initiative is a federal training initiative that specifically focuses on executives of businesses poised for growth in historically challenged communities. AJMS Media was involved in the first Initiative for the ScaleUp America Initiative. This initiative is designed to help small firms with high potential “scale up” and grow their businesses so that they will provide more jobs and have a greater economic impact, both locally and nationally. The SBA has structured this community-focused initiative with local entrepreneurial ecosystems in mind: a key emphasis of the program is building and strengthening entrepreneurial networks within a particular community, so that firms can grow by leveraging and complimenting the existing resources and expertise in their areas. AJMS’ primary business centers on providing the following: compelling professional video, skilled editing services for government agencies, and B2B. AJMS excels at developing customized and creative targeted media to assist federal, state, and local municipalities.

Also, AJMS’ strong background in broadcast television provides a great foundation to work with universities and businesses in communicating their messages to their intended audiences. Some of their services include: business testimonials; promotion and demonstration video; Spanish production; subtitles and closed caption; on-line video for webcast training; DVD authorizing; videoencoding; Green Screen studio; live event website content; spotlight business video; law firm legal video; and photography. Video production is the passion of AJMS and it shows throughout their work. AJMS award-winning productions have satisfied such clients as the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry, Pigeon Forge Fire Department, Vanderbilt Medical Center, Senior Helpers of Nashville, Community Child Care Center, PAYCHEX, and the Southern Automotive Women’s Forum. AJMS has been awarded with a TELLY Award for three consecutive years (2013-2015). The Telly Award honors the very best in commercials, videos and film. They were also honored to receive the Diversity Award - 2014 by the National Association of Women Business Owners of Nashville, Tennessee. Also, in 2016, AJMS received the The Tri-State Minority Supplier Development Council awarded the Minority Supplier of the Year Award - Class 1 for its outstanding achievements in business development and collaboration highlights the superior and collaborative work to AJMS. AJMS finds that the independence and empowerment that comes from owning and operating its own small business, as well as being part of the local small business community is very rewarding. Their challenging journey has made these two women entrepreneurs wise, proving that triumph through perseverance leads to pride and joy. Their beliefs enable them to fully enjoy the journey, while forging ahead, convinced that the best days are yet to come. The SBA is proud to be a part of their entrepreneurial journey.
