Service Disabled Veteran Wins El Paso Small Business Person of the Year

After serving in the U.S. Army for over twenty one years as a logistician, David Granado used his technical expertise to open his own logistics business, DA Defense Logistic HQ in El Paso, Texas. After utilizing the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Service Disabled Veteran and HUBZone certifications, Granado grew his business into a multi-million dollar corporation and claimed the title of 2017 El Paso’s Small Business Person of the Year and 2016 Inc 500 Fastest Growing Small Business.

Granado founded DA Defense Logistics HQ in November of 2009 after an honorable military career. Granado spent much of his time developing logistical programs in support of the Department of Defense worldwide. During this period, he worked with many small and large businesses to fine tune these programs.

“I am doing the same thing I did in the military, just without the uniform,” said Granado.

The company works with many state and federal agencies to provide various services within the maintenance, supply and transportation industries. Granado obtained the SBA’s Service Disabled Veteran and HUBZone certifications in 2011 to increase his contracting opportunities. The certifications help businesses obtain contracts that are set aside to reach the federal government and prime contractor’s small business contracting goals.

“Most large contractors have small business sub-contracting goals and our objective is to fit right in,” said Granado.

The business has experienced a rapid growth rate of over 300 percent each year and is expected to continue this for the next couple of years. The company has grown to 461 employees spanning across eight states: California, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Michigan, and South Carolina, and performs services overseas as well.

“I think what makes a company a success is definitely the employees. “You have to make sure you hire the right employees and genuinely take of them,” said Granado. “We have employees that go the extra mile each and every day, but in return we make sure the company provides them with the same. They do a phenomenal job.”

The company’s sustained growth in sales and number of employees over the years was one of the factors considered in the SBA’s Small Business Person of the Year. Other factors were innovativeness of the product or service offered, response to adversity, and contributions to the community.

As for contributions to the community, Granado is the President Elect of the El Paso 8(a) Government Contractors Association and member of the National Small Business Association (NSBA), Washington D.C.. He is also a current member of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the organization that nominated Granado for Small Business Person of the Year. Granado is also very passionate about three charitable causes in the community. He generously donates $100,000 annually to the United Way Federal Campaign to assist families with basic needs, education and income. He also donates annually to the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Association and the Wounded Warrior Project. However, his greatest satisfaction will always be supporting his employees and employing U.S. veterans. The company proudly boasts that 34 percent of their employees are military veterans.

“I enjoy being able to take care of employees,” said Granado. “Everyone has unforeseen circumstances and in my position I am able to make decisions to ensure they are taken care of, as well as their families too.”
