Bogie's Downtown - Abilene

Bogie’s Downtown Deli is a downtown Abilene luncheon restaurant that serves salads, burgers and sandwiches. They are open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and are one of the few places to grab lunch downtown. As the name implies when you enter the restaurant you are taken back in time to the old movie days of Humphrey Bogart, commonly known as Bogie.

Phillip and Heather Ratliff are both west Texas natives who met in Dallas, TX, married and continued their careers in the DFW metroplex for a few years. Phillip worked long hours in the education system, first as a teacher and coach and then as a principal, and Heather was a CPA. When they decided to start a family, they knew being away from their family in west Texas and the long hours required by Phillip’s job would not be ideal. They looked at moving to Heather’s hometown of Abilene and discovered Bogie’s Downtown Deli was for sale. With Phillip’s experience working in his family’s restaurant, they decided moving to Abilene and owning Bogie’s would be ideal for them so they became entrepreneurs.

Phillip and Heather contacted the Abilene SBDC and worked on developing a business plan to purchase Bogie’s. They received a bank loan and purchased Bogie’s. Recently, they received an SBA loan to purchase the building that houses Bogie’s.

Despite the recent recession they have shown sustainability by being innovative and maintaining a consistent customer base. In a time when other businesses were either closing or struggling to stay open, Bogie’s was able to meet the need of a reasonably priced lunch, keep the same number of employees and show a profit for the business. The business remains one of the well-known anchors of downtown Abilene.
