Husband-Wife Duo Turns Hobby into Second Career with the help of the U.S. Small Business Administration

Situation

Screech Owl Brewing, a small craft brewery located in Bruceton Mills, WV, is owned and operated by husband-wife duo Roger and Crista Johnson. Roger retired from over the road trucking to spend more time at home and has turned his passion for home brewing into a second career. Crista has a strong background in business and in addition to her responsibilities with Screech Owl Brewing is responsible for freight dispatch for multiple trucking companies.

Screech Owl started with a 3.5 gallon brew system and saw immediate success. They had a huge demand for their product but with the current system they were unable to keep up with the demand from their customers.

Solution

Screech Owl was luckily connected with Lindsey Teets, a business coach with the U.S. Small Business Administration’s resource partner the West Virginia Small Business Development Center. With help from Teets they were able to obtain a $50,000 loan from the First Microloan of West Virginia, through SBA’s Microloan Program, to expand their distribution and brewing capacity.

Impact

Since working with Teets and the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, Screech Owl Brewing greatly increased their production which tripled their revenue and now employs seven people. In addition Teets’ provided business direction to help Screech Owl open a tavern, The Spent Grain Café, which officially opened in July 2018.

Screech Owl Brewing was the 2018 SBA WV Encore Entrepreneur which honors small businesses that start a new business after the age of 50, and they were recently featured by Forbes
