Message From the Chief Financial Officer

Welcome to the Small Business Administration's web site for the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. This site enables me to provide you a snapshot of the financial-management activities being undertaken at the SBA.

Although we are a small agency of about 2,500 permanent employees (not including disaster temporary employees), we are one of the five largest Federal credit agencies due to our extensive loan programs for both small businesses and victims of natural disasters. We currently have a portfolio of business and disaster loans and loan guarantees in excess of $80 billion dollars. These loan programs require sophisticated financial-management systems with needs that mirror those of the largest departments in the Federal Government. These requirements are why the SBA is always included as one of the 24 principal agencies relative to financial management and is specifically referenced in the Chief Financial Officers Act of 1990, that requires a career Chief Financial Officer and Deputy CFO.

I'm very proud to be associated with the SBA as its CFO, and I have a tremendous team within my organization dedicated to serving the American public. We have a dynamic financial-management program in place and many very aggressive plans underway to make SBA a top performer in Federal agency financial management. This is a very ambitious goal, but I firmly believe that the successes we have already achieved and our plans for the future put us on the right path to meeting this objective.

I'm pleased to be able to share with you through this web site our success stories, as well as the challenges that we still face as we continue our journey to becoming one of the best in financial management. My staff and I would be happy to talk with you more about our exciting program; we welcome your comments and interaction.
