Matt Sonneborn currently serves as Deputy Associate Administrator of the Office of Communications and Public Liaison at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). He was appointed to the position by President Barack Obama in February 2016.
Before joining the SBA, Matt served as Communications Director and Policy Adviser for Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) where he led a communications team responsible for developing and implementing local and national impact messaging and policy strategy. He has also served as Communications Director for Congressman Bill Owens (NY-21) and worked in the private sector as a public affairs specialist in downtown Washington, D.C.
Prior to his tenure in public service, Matt worked as a university instructor teaching public speaking, academic and professional writing, and communication and rhetorical theory at the University of Colorado and Syracuse University. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia with majors in American Government and English as well as a minor in Astronomy, and later received an M.A. in Communication and Rhetorical Studies from Syracuse University.
