Chris Hatch

Chris Hatch is Regional Communications Director for the United States Small Business Administration Mid-Atlantic Region, where he applies three decades of government, not-for-profit and commercial journalism, public relations and marketing experience to internal and external communications strategies for the only government agency specifically created to help 96% of all American businesses.  He is also a published author and entrepreneur.

Chris joined SBA after serving as Congressional & Public Affairs Specialist for the Naval Sea Systems Command’s Ship Systems Engineering Station (NAVSSES) in Philadelphia, where he coordinated strategies to meet the organization’s outreach needs while synchronizing messages with “Big Navy” goals by leveraging relationships with media, government, academia and industry. 

After Air Force Basic Training, Chris graduated from the Department of Defense Information School and began his career as a Broadcasting & Public Affairs Specialist at Incirlik, Turkey.  His active-duty career took him across the Middle East, Africa and Europe.  He was stationed with the Marine Corps at al Jubayl, Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield/Storm and later traveled in and out of Sarajevo during Operation Provide Promise and Tuzla during Operation Joint Endeavour as an Air Force News Joint Information Team news reporter.  He returned to Saudi Arabia often between 1995 and 1997, including his coverage of the 1996 Khobar Towers terrorist bombing.  During eight years of military service, Chris achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and earned the Joint Service Commendation, Joint Service Achievement and Air Force Achievement medals in addition to several unit commendations and campaign & service medals.  He was also Air Force European Broadcasting Service’s 1993 Airman of the Year.

After the Air Force, Chris headed the NBC-15 Northwest Florida News Bureau, and was lead reporter for the station’s weekend newscasts.  Chris later created the position of Public Information Officer for the City of Mobile, Alabama’s Office of Special Events where he designed communications plans for not-for-profit events, including: Brownbag in Bienville; Mobile International Festival; the 2001 USA Track & Field Fall Cross Country Nationals; and First Night Mobile.  He also handled advertising and marketing for the University of South Alabama Career Services Office, and wrote opinion columns for the USA Vanguard newspaper.

Chris is a Cum Laude graduate of the University of South Alabama, with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications – PR Track.  He also has an Associate’s Degree from the Community College of the Air Force, and is a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force’s Airman Leadership School. Chris is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Philadelphia Chapter where he once served as an Executive Committee Member-at-Large of the Government Section; and serves as a mentor and judge with PRSA Philadelphia’s Nancy Bacher Long PR Institute
