Melanie Norton is the regional communications director for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Region X Office in Seattle serving Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. In this role, Norton leads public affairs, media relations, digital and marketing communications for the SBA in the Pacific Northwest. She also directly supports speechwriting, public and media engagement for the regional administrator, a Presidential appointed position.
Prior to coming to the SBA in February 2013, Norton was the public affairs specialist for the U.S. Peace Corps West Coast Region where she led a public affairs team and managed news media, online media, marketing, advertising and communications for the nine states in the agency’s largest region. She also served as a community and organizational development adviser with the Peace Corps for two years in Bulgaria, assisting local governments and non-government organizations (NGOs) during the country’s accession into the European Union.
Before relocating to the Pacific Northwest from her hometown of Phoenix, Norton managed a variety of business and government accounts at a full-service adverting and public relations agency, developed content for a search engine marketing firm, and implemented public relations campaigns for local nonprofits and a regional medical center.
Norton enjoys exploring new places – whether it’s a local restaurant, hiking trail or foreign country. She finds joy spending time with family and friends, listening to or playing music, and experimenting with new recipes. She lives in South Puget Sound with her husband, Andy.
