Terry Sutherland

Terry Sutherland supports the Associate Administrator for the Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL). As the Deputy Associate Administrator he is responsible for providing senior executive leadership and management oversight for the Press Office, Marketing, Strategic Alliances, Digital Media and budget.

He has served at SBA since 2013 with duties in the Office of  Entrepreneurship Education (OEE), the Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD) and several previous positions within OCPL.  Prior to SBA he served as the senior spokesman and Director, Corporate Communications, for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA) and prior to that he was the senior spokesman and Chief, External Communications at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Before embarking on his civilian federal career Mr. Sutherland served 20 years in the United States Navy, first as a Surface Warfare Officer and then as a career-designated Public Affairs Officer. He retired as a Commander in 2007. He is a Desert Storm veteran.

In addition to his experience, Mr. Sutherland was awarded a master’s degree in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma. He is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Senior Executive Fellows program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Virginia Military Institute where he also received his naval officer commission. He graduated from the CFP® Board Registered education program at Georgetown University and in years past was a registered stockbroker and financial advisor with NASD/FINRA Series 7 and 66 licenses.
