National Women’s Business Council

The National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) is a nonpartisan federal advisory committee. It provides independent advice and policy recommendations to the President, Congress, and SBA on issues important to women business owners and entrepreneurs.

Established by the Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988, NWBC operates under the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

What NWBC does

NWBC examines policies, programs, and economic issues that can affect women’s ability to start, grow, and sustain businesses.

Its work includes:

  • Reviewing public- and private-sector policies and programs that affect women business owners, including access to credit and capital
  • Supporting improved data collection and research on women-owned businesses
  • Reviewing federal programs and operations that can support women’s business ownership
  • Developing policy recommendations and strategies to advance women’s business enterprise

Areas of focus

NWBC’s work has addressed issues such as:

  • Access to capital
  • Federal contracting and other market opportunities
  • Business growth and job creation
  • Data and research on women-owned businesses
  • Barriers and opportunities for entrepreneurs in rural, tribal, and underserved communities

Help for women entrepreneurs

NWBC is an advisory body and does not provide direct business counseling or loans. SBA offers services for women entrepreneurs through the Office of Women’s Business Ownership and its nationwide network of Women’s Business Centers.

Women’s Business Centers provide training, counseling, and support to help entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. SBA also offers programs and resources related to capital, federal contracting, and business development.

Small Business Lending Advisory Council

Overview

The Small Business Lending Advisory Council advises SBA on small business lending matters. The council recommends policy and program changes to improve small businesses’ access to capital.

Council members examine issues such as:

  • Obstacles small businesses face when accessing capital, especially in underserved and under-resourced communities.
  • Challenges lenders face when providing capital to small businesses through SBA programs.
  • Private sector innovation in the small business lending community.

Interagency Task Force for Small Business Development 

The Interagency Task Force for Small Business Development (Task Force) was established February 14, 2008 by Public Law 110-186 and executed by Executive Order. The Task Force is chaired by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and is comprised of representatives appointed by SBA’s Administrator from: SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Labor (DOL), the Department of Treasury (Treasury), the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), the General Services Administration (GSA), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and four representatives from veterans service and military organizations.

Advisory Committee on Veterans Business Affairs

Public Law 106-50, the Veterans Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development Act of 1999, established the Small Business Administration Advisory Committee on Veterans Business Affairs to serve as an independent source of advice and policy recommendations to the Administrator of the Small Business Administration, the Associate Administrator for SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development (OVBD), Congress, the President, and other U.S. policymakers. The SBA Administrator is responsible for appointment members to the board. The board is made up of 15 volunteers comprised of veteran small business owners and veteran service organization representatives.
