Lorenzana Brothers Help Small Businesses Start, Grow and Succeed

April 10 is National Siblings Day and we’re celebrating here at the U.S. Small Business Administration with the Lorenzana brothers. We sat down with Christopher and Ian Lorenzana for an interview on what makes this dynamic sibling team shine and most importantly, how they help small business owners and entrepreneurs in their communities start, grow and succeed in business.

What do you do at the U.S. Small Business Administration?

Christopher: I’m the Lead Economic Development Specialist for the SBA Orange County/Inland Empire District Office in Southern California, which means I’m part of a team of dedicated professionals that take pride in informing, educating and connecting small businesses and entrepreneurs with the resources they need to start or grow.

Ian: I connect the SBA’s resources to the taxpayers who need them. That’s what I do in a nutshell. My official title is Economic Development Specialist at the SBA Utah District Office. I like to think of myself as a signpost, directing business owners and entrepreneurs to the programs and services that help them overcome obstacles to success. I consider myself a cheerleader that helps to inspire and encourage people to continue on, even when they feel defeated. I act as an advocate for business owners; standing alongside them when other governmental bureaucracies, regulations, and red tape make progress difficult.

What do you love about helping small businesses?

Christopher: I love playing a part in helping people achieve the American Dream through owning a thriving business. This success enables people to spend time with their passions, contribute to society positively and helps one generation set up the next for success. I can assure you this Dream is alive and well, because I see it in action daily! I also really enjoy making connections or answering questions for people that make a real impact. I’m talking about simple things, like making an introduction to another person, or providing someone with information they weren’t aware of that can help them in their efforts.

Ian: I enjoy knowing that the work that I do really does improve the lives of others. When I help people start and grow their businesses, through the programs offered by the SBA and other partners, people’s lives change for the better. Families are strengthened. Mothers and fathers become better providers. Our country becomes a greater nation. When I work, I try to do the best that I can…as though I am doing it for God himself.

What’s it like working in the same agency as your sibling?

Christopher: I really enjoy it. We get to bounce ideas off each other or share experiences when working on similar initiatives. Ian knows my journey working at the SBA and I know his. He’s my role model and has always had my back, and I’m grateful for that. He’s got great experience, from his days in the Army as a combat medic, to his strong faith, so I try to learn as much as possible from him.

Ian: It’s a blessing to be able to share the successes and struggles I face at work with someone as close as my own brother and best friend. I know I always have someone I can bounce ideas off of, vent to, or seek advice from.
