Event description

This workshop is designed to offer a high-level roadmap of what business owners should be concerned with as they plan for the future—whether preparing for retirement, an unexpected disability, or simply seeking to preserve the value of what they’ve built. It is aimed to help participants identify key planning areas and explore actionable next steps tailored to their individual situations.

The core areas we covered will include:

1. Business Valuation
Discussion of methods used to determine what your business is worth, including:

  • Cost Approach (book value, adjusted book value, liquidation value)
  • Income Approach (capitalization of earnings, discounted future earnings)
  • Market Approach (comparing to similar recently sold businesses)

2. Succession Planning
This section helps business owners explore critical decisions, such as:

  • Who will own and manage the business when you're no longer involved?
  • Should the business be continued by family, sold to a partner, or liquidated?
  • What are the financial and emotional dynamics of these choices?

3. Buy-Sell Agreements

Review of how to legally and financially prepare for ownership transitions by:

  • Structuring clear agreements (redemption, cross-purchase, wait-and-see)
  • Exploring funding strategies (cash, loans, insurance, etc.)
  • Ensuring the business remains stable through any ownership change
